Cutting up India proved to be a virtually impossible task, beginning with the actual dividing line. An independent British referee was given the unenviable task. Most problematic were Bengal and the Punjab, where populations of Moslems and Hindus were mixed and large scale movement took place with much bloodshed. In addition, the so-called independent princely state which the British had maintained had to be incorporated into India and Pakistan. Kashmir, one of these states, held out. To this day, the Kashmiri issue has not been resolved between India and Pakistan.
